Daniel Saltzman is the father of Bella, grandfather of Faroe, and father-in-law of Arthur Lester. He is a deeply religious man and a Freemason.

A large, almost intimidating man with thick hands and large mustache. His hair was brown peppered with gray. He wore glasses low on his nose.[1]
History[]
Coming from a wealthy family, Daniel and his parents emigrated to the United States at some point in his life.[2] At least since Faroe's birth, Daniel lived in New York City, on East 81st and Park Avenue. A deeply religious man, Daniel was involved with the church as a Deacon or something similar.[2] He was a member of the Freemasons.[3] He believed Bella was too good for Arthur.[1]
After Faroe's death, Daniel visited Arthur in Arkham. The visit was tense as Daniel berated Arthur about not composing, not visiting, and removing religion from his life. However, he left Arthur with two pieces of advice that later guided Arthur; he said both that "life is loss; everyone will face it, and everyone will succumb to it" and that "guilt is a companion of death; do not let it rival you." When Arthur expressed fear he couldn't escape the guilt, Daniel responded, "Fair enough. But you don't have to let it win."[4]
Arthur visits Daniel in New York City. Daniel tells Arthur that he's continued his work with the Church, and that it's kept him busy. When Arthur pushes for him to speak his mind, he states resentment for Arthur being so distant, and keeping Faroe away from him. He also reveals that Bella never loved Arthur, and didn't want to marry him. When they come to more of an understanding, Daniels admits to wishing he and Arthur could have had more of a father-son relationship. Shortly after this, the Butcher arrives; he fires a shotgun through the door, presumably killing Daniel before Arthur can warn him.[1]
Later, Larson informs the Butcher that Daniel has survived and is currently in Lenox Hill Hospital. Once the Butcher is dealt with, he reconciles with Arthur, affirming he has always believed Arthur is a good man, and tells him where to get his Freemason's ring from his home. He advises Arthur to learn to trust other people again.[5]
